Reactions to Hooks’ Feminism is for Everybody I am not a feminist simply because I was raised in a feminist household. I am not a feminist because I am an independent, educated woman. I am not a feminist because I am a bitter female, nor because I am a â€Å"woman scorned.† I am not a feminist because I hate men, nor because I am a lesbian nor because I like to listen to the Indigo Girls. To the contrary I love men and I am not a lesbian. While I agree with hooks that â€Å"feminism is a movement to end sexism, sexist exploitation, and oppression† (viii), I believe that her definition of â€Å"feminism† states the goals of the movement rather than actually defining the term itself. In my mind, feminism is a synonym for equality. In my opinion, hooks’ book is perfectly poised to become THE OFFICIAL â€Å"handbook† or â€Å"cliff notes† to feminism. Although it’s short, Feminism is for Everybody is powerful. It addresses all of the most prevalent issues facing the contemporary feminist movement, everything from where feminism stands, reproductive choice, beauty, violence, race, class, work, all the way to where feminism will go in the future. She uses simple, direct language to express complex issues. However, that is not to say that she â€Å"dumbs-down† such topics. Rather, she makes them more comprehensible to those not as familiar with feminism as a discipline. This book offers everyone (man or woman) a chance to explore feminism. Employee motivation and job satisfaction are the two most major issues in todays world, as the success of any project or the productivity of the organization largely depends on the job satisfaction of the employees, employee commitment and motivation (Owens 2015). There are few traditional human resources theories that have been developed such as Maslow hierarchy of needs, Herzberg's dual factor theory and many more which indicate that the employees who are satisfied with their job profile have a tendency to be more productive. This study will trigger the issue of job satisfaction and my personal experience when I w as working as a customer care officer at Convergys private limited, India for one year. I will also analyze my personal experience with the help of three motivational theories, Herzberg's dual factor theory, Maslow hierarchy of needs and expectancy theory. Job Satisfaction The concept of job satisfaction can be identified in different approaches. Several practitioners and researcher have been defined the concept, yet the mostly used definition of the job satisfaction is the "a pleasurable or positive emotional state resulting from the apprajsa1 of one's job or job experiences by Locke (Hlsheger et al. 2013). Other researchers have also indicated that the concept of job satisfaction includes the psychological response to the individual job profile and it also includes the affective, cognitive and the behavioral components. Another scholar Hoppock had defined the concept as the combination of physiological, psychological and environmental situations which causes a person to feel satisfied with his or her job. This approach also recognizes the factor that even if the concept of satisfaction depends on the external factors, it still remains as an internal factor that indicates to the feeling of the employee about their jobs. The concept presents numbers of factors which causes the feeling of contentment. Several scholars also focus on the position of the employees within the workplace while defining job satisfaction (Ebadifard, Badloo. and Rezaei 2015). Therefore, it can also be said that job satisfaction can also be defined as the affective orientation of the employees towards their job roles in the organization. Therefore it can be said that the concept of job satisfaction generally represents a numbers of negative and positive feeling which the employees have towards their individual job roles. When a employee works in an organization, the job role is related with their desires, needs and the experience that determines the expectation form the job profile. The concept of job satisfaction determines the extent to which the expectations are fulfilled. It is also linked with the behavior of the employee within the organization. It is basically the sense of accomplishment and the success of the employees. In addition to that, it is also perceived that the job satisfaction is directly linked to the productivity of the individual. It implies how the individual enjoys his or her job, individual productivity and how the person is being rewarded in the work place (Jensen and Jacobsen 2015). It also indicates to the happiness and enthusiasm with the job profile. Job satisfaction is the primary compon ent which leads to the further promotion, recognition and the accomplishment of other goals which may lead to the sense of fulfillment Therefore, job satisfaction can also be defined as the individual degree of feeling content with the job and the rewards he or she gets out of the job role, specifically in terms of the inherent motivation. This particular term usually refers to the feelings and the attitude that the employees have about their job. If the particular employee has a favorable and positive attitude about their job, that would indicate a sense of job satisfaction, on the other hand, the unfavorable and negative attitude towards the job would indicate a sense of dissatisfaction towards the job. It is the combination of the belief and feelings that the employees carry towards their job role. The degree of job satisfaction may range from the extreme satisfaction to the extreme dissatisfaction. However, it should be remembered that the sense of satisfaction or dissatisfaction can be towards several other aspects other than the specific job on a whole, it may be regarding the subordinates or the supervisors, coworkers or the remuneration. Therefore it can be said that it is a multifaceted and complex concept that can differ from person to person (Girma 2016). The concept of job satisfaction is mostly linked with the motivation, but both these concepts have a complicated relationship to share. Even though motivation is not a similar concept such as the job satisfaction, but both has a close relationship. The concept of job satisfaction is more of an internal state or an attitude. For instance, it could be associated with the individual feeling of achievement. However, the motivation is mostly an external factor. It can be considered that job satisfaction represents a sense which appears as an outcome of the awareness that this specific job fulfills all the psychological and materialistic requirements of the individual (Wong and Laschinger 2013). Therefore, it is considered as one of the primary factors when dealing with the efficiency of the business organization. The innovative managerial paradigm in todays business organizations considers that the human resources of the organization should be treated in a good way and the fulfillment of their personal desires and needs can act as an indic ator of the job satisfaction. Personal Experience Through my personal experience of working as a customer care officer at Convergys private limited, India, I will try to analyze the concept of job satisfaction. While working there my job was to interact with the customers of the company and provide them necessary information regarding the services and products about the company. In addition to that, I was also dealing with resolving the consumer complaints. As a customer care officer I was mostly responsible for few major things within the organization, handling the problems, few clerical tasks such as maintaining the consumer accounts, processing new consumer accounts, filling the documents and implementing necessary changes in the existing documents. My job also involved the direct contact with the consumers, so I was positive in building the relationship with all my consumers and by doing that I had developed a loyal consumer base of our company. While doing my job I also required determining the specific needs of the consumers a nd provide them appropriate solutions. I was very happy and content in my job as the organization made effort to recognize all the achievements of the employees. Whenever we achieved more that our daily targets, our supervisors recognized the effort and cheered us. In any situation, where I could be of a great help, my supervisors have congratulated me on helping the organization in difficult times. There was a fair reward and recognition system within the organization. They were sometimes monetary, but sometimes we were also given different gifts on our accomplishments. The company had a policy of a monthly reward and recognition system, where one person from each of the teams was selected every month whose performance was amazing. Therefore it created an ambience of healthy competition amongst the employees. Our supervisors were very much supportive and helped us with everything that we had asked while working. Our salary had increased after a certain quarter; therefore there were least monetary grievances within the organization. Therefore, overall it can be said that my one year experience in the organization was quite good and I was happy with the job. Analyzing the motivation In this section, I will analyze the motivation and job satisfaction of my previous job with the help of three theories of motivation, Herzberg's dual factor theory, Maslow hierarchy of needs and expectancy theory. According to Maslow hierarchy of needs, every individual has few basic needs such as physiological needs, safety needs, social needs and esteem needs (Lester 2013). The hierarchy of those needs can be depicted in a pyramid where the most essential needs are at the bottom and the need of self-actualization is at the top. The most basic needs or the physiological needs are the exact needs for the individual survival; if these needs are not met the human body will not be able to function. The metabolic needs such as water, air, food, shelter and clothing are included in this need. The organization can satisfy these basic needs of its employees by providing them adequate remuneration, so that the employees can satisfy their basic needs. This was entirely taken care of by my pre vious organization, as the remuneration package was quite good. When the fundamental needs are met, an individual looks out for the safety needs, which is at the second level in the hierarchical model of Maslow. This level includes emotional needs, well being and health security, safety of the property if any kind of natural calamities occur (Cherry 2015). My previous organization has also ensured that is employees are safe with the health security plan for the employee and their respective families. This health scheme has made all the employees happy and satisfied as the organization had conveyed the message that they also care about the health of employees. The next level of need is the social needs, where an individual needs the feeling of acceptance and belonging. This need can be fulfilled when an individual is a part of small groups such as office teams, clubs, school houses etc and large groups such as social media, sports team or political parties (Arekar et al. 2016). Howev er, the employees in the organization were divided into different teams and there was a healthy competition amongst them. These had generated a sense of belonging in them. The next level is the esteem needs where the individual needs to be respected by other individuals and vise versa. The last level is the self actualization need where the individual can grow and develop their abilities. The organization also took care both of these needs with their various schemes of reward and recognition. They have recognized the smallest achievements of the employees and rewarded them. The two factor theory of Herzberg indicates that there are various factors within the work place which are responsible for the job satisfaction of the employees whereas there is another set of factors that causes the job dissatisfaction. Herzberg has classified these factors into two categories. The first category is the hygiene factors or the ones which are necessary for the survival of the basic motivation within the workplace. They may not lead to the long term motivation but absence of these factors would lead to a huge amount of dissatisfaction. This category includes the pay structure, administrative policies of the organization, fringe benefits, safe working atmosphere, interpersonal relationships and job security (Park and Ryoo 2013). My previous organization was able to provide almost all the factors with their administrative policies. The next factor is the motivational factors which yield the positive satisfaction in the employees. This category includes recognition, respo nsibility, opportunity for individual growth and the meaningfulness of work (Jansen and Samuel 2014). The organization also took care of the motivational needs with their reward and recognition policies. Whereas the previous theories indicate the relationship between the external factors and the internal needs, the expectancy theory makes an attempt to separate the performance, effort and outcomes. This theory presumes that the increasing effort that rises from the motivation leads to the increased productivity (Blotnicky, Mann and Joy 2015). This affects the allover productivity of the organization. This was also seen in my previous organization where the authorities strengthened the reward system so that the employees make higher productivity. Conclusion In conclusion, it can be said that, job satisfaction largely depends on the increased motivational factors within the organization. Therefore the organization should ensure that the management provides adequate amount of motivation for the employees so that they increase the performance level gradually. However, the companies can also apply other motivational plans as the productivity of the employees mostly depend on the job satisfaction factor of the employees. One of the main styles of public speaking King uses is repetition. Throughout the speech he constant repeats certain words and catch phrases such as â€Å"I have a dream† or â€Å"Let freedom ring. † These help to drill his words into the audience and create a lasting impression. This is a technique that is generally used in speeches, especially those dealing with politics. Obama, another man making a big change in society also uses this technique with his catch phrase â€Å"Yes we can,† the use of repetition allows the speaker to get their words through to every listener whether they realize it or not. King also includes aspects of the American Culture in his speech. This not only draws the attention of the white Americans but also shows a connection between the blacks and the whites, they are all Americans and they all live on the same land. King says lines like â€Å"when architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence,† this line praises the American beliefs. King gives a strong point of connection between the blacks and whites and their belief in the Declaration of Independence. He does not put down the American government despite the segregation and hardships but instead compliments them in his speech. The use of American Culture can also tie into King’s pacifism. King was against war and violence and in his speech he states â€Å"we must not allow our creative protest to degenerate into physical violence,† this connects to why he never puts down the government. King shows that with kindness you get further than with violence as the changes that he made in the world are much more than a war would have done. Another strong point of King’s speaking is his inclusivity of the audience. He rarely states his goals in the form of ‘I’ but instead using ‘we. ’ This technique draws the audience in and includes them in the mission King is presenting to them. â€Å"with this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to go to jail together, to stand up to freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day. † Note how King never refers to any of the actions in singular form. He says we will work together, stand up to freedom together. King always includes the audience to keep their attention and make them feel a part of the speech and like he is speaking directly to them and asking them to join him so that together they can make a change. King also used many links to religion. By linking his speech to biblical references he was able to connect on a deeper level with the religious members of his audience. During this point in time many people were spiritual, including the black population who were very religious as it helped them through the hard times of segregation and the assault they were experiencing. King used quotes such as â€Å"the glory of the Lord shall be revealed and all flesh shall see it together† referring to the thought that the Lord’s power will overrule cruelty and both blacks and whites will witness it together creating a world free from segregation. Another strong technique that King uses is alliteration. symbolic shadow we stand today, signed † the repetition of the sound ‘s’ creates a dramatic sentence emphasizing the words using this sound. It draws the audiences ear to these sentences and because of the similar sounds allows the phrase to be remembered easier. In some cases norepinepherin can encourage quick emotional responses like anger and also discourage logical thinking, while serotonin can cause irritability and a lack of rational emotion. All of them can cause anger, anxiety, depression, insecure feelings, and fear. To find out what the characteristics of personality are, I found another site appropriate. It lists 16 types of personality that are controlled by various combinations of 4 dimensions: extrovert vs. introvert, sensor vs. intuitive, thinker vs. feeler, and judger vs. perceiver. You can see how some of these could be determined by neurotransmitters. With happiness in particular, a group of psychologists describe it through the set-point idea. The set-point idea contends that there is a genetically determined mood level that can be nudged by life slightly upward or downward, but in the long run will stay about the same for each individual. Diversity among group members is an important resource that can be utilized to improve the group's productivity.While doing so may not be easy, it is important to understand that there are a number of barriers to effective interactions with culturally diverse groups. These include stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination, he tendency to blame the victim, and cultural clashes. Stereotypes Stereotypes can be found everywhere, and everyone h as them. Stereotypes are a product of the way the mind stores, organizes, and recalls information. They are used to describe differences among groups and to predict how others will behave.They reduce complexities, assist in making quick decisions, fill in gaps of what is known, and help to recognize patterns needed to draw conclusions. In modern thought, stereotypes are defined as â€Å"a belief that associates a whole group of people with certain traits. Stereotypes are (1) cognitive; (2) reflect a set of related beliefs rather than isolated behaviors; (3) describe attributes, personalities, and characters so that groups can be compared and differentiated; and are shared by individuals and groups holding them (Cashmere &Del Boca, 1979).Prejudice and Discrimination To be prejudiced meaner, literally, to prejudge, however, prejudice can be defined as an unjustified negative attitude toward a person based solely on that individual's membership in a group other than one's own. Stereot ypes taken to extremes, restudies are Judgments made about others that establish a superiority/inferiority belief system. If one person dislikes another simply because that other is identified with a different ethnic group, sex, religion, socio-economic status, or creed, then prejudice is present (Lopper, 1954).Ethnocentrism is the tendency to regard one's own ethnic group, nation, religion, or culture as better or more â€Å"correct† than others. When ethnocentrism is present, the standards and values of our culture are used as a yardstick to measure the worth of other ethnic groups. Ethnocentrism is often perpetuated by cultural conditioning. As children, individuals are raised to fit a into a particular culture, and conditioned to respond to various situations in similar ways that are modeled by the adults (Rotary, Evans, ; Fuller, 1979). Racism is a prejudice directed at people because of their race, or ethnic membership.Although scientific evidence indicates that only on e human race exists, with many variations, various other people assume that biological differences exist as evidenced by physical appearances. Race has taken on a social meaning, suggesting one's status within the social construct. This status structure introduces power preferences as people of different constructs interact with one another (Steele & Aaron's, 1995). When prejudice is acted upon, it is discrimination. Discrimination is an action taken to harm a group or any of its members. It is a negative, and often aggressive action aimed at the target of the prejudice.Discrimination is aimed at denying members of the targeted groups treatment and opportunities equal to those afforded to the dominant group. To reduce prejudices, use of stereotypes, and potential to discriminate, the following steps may be utilized Monsoon ; Johnson, 1999): 1) admit to having prejudices (everyone does; there are no exceptions) and commit to reducing them; 2) Identify the stereotypes that reflect the presence of prejudices and feedback from diverse friends and colleagues about how well the value and respect for diversity are being communicated.Blaming the victim Many people believe the world is Just a place where individuals â€Å"get what they deserve†, (I. E. Winning the lotto is a result of being a nice person who deserves some good luck, or being robbed is the result of being careless and is punishment for past misdeeds). The question arises then, â€Å"what happens when the situations appear unjust? † One method that is utilized and present in much of the communications between individuals is to blame the victim by convincing the self, that no injustice actually occurred.Victims of prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination are often seen as â€Å"having done something wrong. † Blaming the victim occurs when the cause of discrimination or misfortune is attributed to the personal characteristics of the victim (Hellhole, 1994). Culture Clash Another com mon barrier to effective communications across divers cultures is the dead of cultural clash. Cultural clashes are conflicts over basic values that occur when members of minority groups question the values of the majority.Common reaction by majority group members when their values are being questioned are feeling: 1) Threatened: their responses include avoidance, denial, and defensiveness; 2) Confused: their responses include seeking more information in an attempt to redefine the problem; 3) Enhanced: their responses include heightened anticipation, awareness, and positive actions that lead to solving the problem (Outsold, 1991). Many cultural clashes develop in and between groups.These clashes range from threatening to confusing to enhancing, and when handled appropriately, these clashes are another form of conflict and they can serve as learning experiences rather than barriers. In our increasingly global community, highly diverse individuals interact daily, studying, working, and playing together in small groups. Rapidly growing global interdependence and the increasing emphasis on teamwork have resulted in groups with quite diverse membership.Diversity among members is no longer exceptional or optional; it is the everyday rule. Individuals are expected to interact effectively and utilize appropriate communication skills among people with a variety of characteristics and backgrounds. Doing so has many advantages, including increased group productivity on a variety of tasks. Heterogeneity in groups also increases the difficulty of developing cohesive relationships among its members and increases the potential for conflict among members.For group members to capitalize on their differences, a high level of cultural competence and awareness must be implemented into the daily communications, to ensure that a high level of positive interdependence exists among group members. Host family - Essay Example This was mainly due to the fact that most of the interactions that I came to experience as well as the culture of the society within which I lived was absolutely different from the one that I was used to. In fact, when one considers my experiences in the United States, one would say that it was a completely opposite from the way of life in China, my home country. When I first learnt that I my application for foreign exchange had been approved and that I was to go to Oregon, United States, I was extremely excited. This was mainly because I had never before left my home country and I was eager to experience another place which was dissimilar from home. I found out that I had been assigned a host family and while I met this news with some apprehension, since I did not know what to expect from these people, I later came to be glad that they had been selected for me. The family that I went to live with were known as the Johnsons, and they were honest and hardworking individuals who were a lso strong in their Christian faith, a fact that I found highly impressive. In my home country, where not many of the people are religious, and the latter is often discouraged, we has often heard rumour that the people in the west only professed the Christian faith yet rarely practiced it. The Johnsons, however, proved this impression to be wrong, and by their taking me into their home and treating me as one of their own, I felt like a real part of their family. Among the things that most impressed me about this family is that they had adopted a girl from China, treating her as if she was their own biological child through their provision of their love and support. Lily, the little girl, had been adopted as a baby when her parents died and she was left an orphan. Despite this tragic beginning of her life, Lily seems to have adjusted well to her new environment, to the extent of not remembering any Chinese, a fact that I learnt from my futile attempts to address her in her native lan guage. In China, I had learnt some English but while this had been the case, when I went for exchange, I could not speak it very well. Despite the language barrier between me and my host family, the latter took in stride and they often encouraged me to express myself the best way that I could through the use of my limited vocabulary. When all attempts at communicating using English failed, and it happened often, we would resort to using signs, a factor of communication that I found to be most interesting. The experience of the Johnsons when raising Lily might have helped a lot in their communication with me since after a fortnight or so; we could communicate with almost no problem at all since we had learnt each other’s speech and sign patterns. Since I went to school with the other two older Johnson children, Josh and Mary, who were close to my age and attended almost the same classes, I found it much easier to adjust to the new school environment than if I had had to go alo ne. These two, who became very close friends and my constant companions, gave me the motivation to learn my English so that I could communicate with them better. My thirst to learn might have also played a role in my wanting to better my English and in all my attempts, the Johnsons often gave me their support. Since I am a fast learner, within a few weeks of living with my host family, I could confidently express
